Latest Internet Rumor: Gun Owners Beware!

One of the perks of my job is that I get to read emails from all of our viewers and anyone else who decides to send an email to KSAT. They range from story tips to criticism to compliments to claims that make me and my co-workers go, “Huh?” Those are often stories that have been forwarded to someone and begin with a familiar tone. It’s usually something like this, “You’ll be losing your right to …”

Now those always make me raise an eyebrow (and with lots of practice, I think I’m pretty good at that). So allow me to debunk this latest rumor here to save myself and my co-workers from having to read and delete this one again.

So here’s the email I received last week:

Subj:  Gun Owners READ AND PASS THIS  ALONG

Concerning the Blair-Holt proposed legislation.

Senate Bill  SB-2099 will require  us to put on our 2009  1040 federal tax form all  guns that you have or own. It may require  fingerprints and a tax of $50 per gun. This bill was introduced on  Feb. 24. This bill will become public knowledge 30  days after it is voted into law. This is an  amendment to the Internal Revenue Act of  1986. This means that the Finance Committee can  pass this without the Senate voting on it at all. The full text of the proposed  amendment is on the U.S. Senate homepage, http://www.senate.gov/ You can find the bill by  doing a search by the bill number, SB-2099. You know who to call; I  strongly suggest you do.

Please send a copy of this  e-mail to every gun owner you  know.

Congress is now starting on the  firearms confiscation bill. If it passes, gun owners will become criminals if you don’t  fully comply.  It has started.

Very Important for you to be aware of a new bill HR 45  introduced into the House. This is the Blair  Holt Firearm Licensing & Record of  Sale Act of 2009.

Even gun shop owners didn’t know about this because the government  is trying to fly it under the  radar.

To find out about this – go to any  government website and type in HR 45  or Google HR 45 Blair Holt Firearm  Licensing & Record of Sales Act of 2009. You  will get all the information. Basically this would make it illegal to own a firearm –  any rifle with a clip or  ANY pistol unless:

-It is registered

-You are fingerprinted

-You  supply a current Driver’s License

-You  supply your Social Security #

-You will  submit to a physical  & mental evaluation at  any time  of  their choosing

-Each update – change or ownership through private  or public sale must be reported and costs $25

– Failure to do so you  automatically  lose the right to own a firearm and are subject  up to a year in jail.

-There is a child provision  clause on page 16 section 305  stating a  child-access provision. Gun must be  locked and inaccessible to any child under 18.

-They would have the right to come and inspect  that you are storing your gun safely away from accessibility to children  and fine is  punishable for up to 5 yrs. in prison.

If you think this is a joke  go to the website  and take your pick of many options to read this. It is long and lengthy.  But, more  and more people are becoming aware of this.

Pass the word along.  Any hunters in  your family pass this along.

This is just a “termite” approach to complete confiscation of guns and disarming of our society to the point we have no  defense – chip away a little here and there until the goal is accomplished  before anyone realizes it.

This is one to act on whether you own a gun or not.

If you take my gun, only the criminal will have one to use against me. HR 45 only makes me/us less safe.

Please.. copy and send this out to EVERYONE in the USA whether you support the Right to Bear Arms or are for gun control. We all  should have the right to choose.

So, I’ll start at the top, with “Senate Bill 2099.” I did as this writer asked and went to the Senate’s site. And to search by bill number, you are actually directed to the Library of Congress site. I typed in SB 2099. The results: no items were found. That was my first clue that this email was too good to be true. Next stop, the bi-partisan FactCheck.org. There it was – debunked (and with nearly identical claims as the one in the email). I also went to another (usually) reliable site, Snopes.com. Big false there.

Because I’ve responded to similar emails in the past, I knew that would not be good enough for some people. I went a step further. I contacted US Senator John Cornyn’s office. This is the response I received:

“I checked with our legislative aide, and it is a hoax.”

Since he’s on record as supporting gun rights, I figured his office would know if there was any truth to this email. The response I received also included this link to the NRA’s site clearing up this bogus email. Here’s hoping that resolves the issue!

If you receive an email like this, I hope you’ll look for a few hints that it’s probably not real:

  • It uses phrases like “fly under the radar.” If there is an issue that would take away your rights, you can rest assured that politicians would raise a fuss. They’d be on the cable news channels making sure they were heard. And a rights group would likely launch a campaign to make sure you knew about it so you could make your voice heard.
  • When these emails name bills with their number/sponsor, please go to this site to look it up before you hit forward. Also, when it links to you to the alleged resources, make sure you can spot a date. If there’s not one listed, it might not be a current issue (and likely died in Congress in a previous session).
  • If the email tells use to send it to everyone, that’s a good sign it’s just meant to fill in-boxes (like mine). Please think before you forward.

Like my co-workers, I don’t mind these messages. I just hope that people take the time to find the facts – like I have. If you can’t trust the media, find a like-minded politician and ask him/her. You can find their information here.

Snopes.com says this email is true.

Since when can you trust the media?

  4. This resolution has been in committee since February (http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/D?d111:85:./temp/~bdPHX8:@@@X|/bss/111search.html|). That’s a long time for something to sit without action which usually means it’s not going anywhere.

Also, here’s the difference between a bill (which is what the email claims this proposal is) and a resolution (which is where the matter stands): http://www.c-span.org/questions/weekly50.asp
