LOST: The Variable

Daniel is back on the island at the same time as everyone else. Here’s hoping we finally find out what the Farraday is happening! Get the recap after the jump.

LA: Desmond is being rushed through a hospital. They make Penny and little Charlie wait. Daniel’s mother shows up. Penny has never met him. Eloise says it’s her fault Desmond was shot. She thinks Eloise is Ben’s mother. She says she’s Daniel’s mother.

30 Years Earlier: Daniel gets out of the submarine. Miles is there. He thought Miles went to invent the DVD. Miles has the picture of everyone in the Dharma outfits. Daniel goes to Jack. He asks how he got back to the island. Daniel says he was at Dharma Headquarters in Ann Arbor doing research. Jack says he was on a plane. He says Daniel’s mother told him to get on a plane. Daniel asks if she told him it was his destiny. Jack says yes. Daniel says, “Well, I got some news for you. You don’t belong here at all. She was wrong.”

Somewhere in time: Young Daniel is playing the piano. His mother walks in. She asks if he knows what destiny means. She says it means if one has a special gift, it must be nurtured. She asks how many beats the metronome counted since he started playing. Daniel says 864. She says his gift is his mind – meant for science, math – and it’s her job to keep him on his path. So she says there’s no more time for distractions. He says he can make time to play the piano and math and science. She closes the piano.

On the island: Daniel has Miles drive him to The Orchid. Jack wants to know what Daniel meant. He goes to Sawyer’s home. He tells him Farraday is back. Sawyer says he’s busy and tries to shut the door. Juliet tells Sawyer to tell Jack what they’re doing. Sawyer says Phil got a video of Kate and Sawyer taking Ben to The Others. Phil is tied up in a closet. Daniel sees Dr. Chang, then follows him into The Orchid. Chang is telling a man not to drill 1 centimeter further because it would release all that energy and if that were to happen, “God help us all.” Daniel bumps into him, then walks the other way. He sees them hauling a man off. A guy says to Daniel, “Did you hear that? Time travel. How stupid does that guy think we are.” Daniel goes to Chang and tells him he met him three years ago. Daniel then says they need to order the evacuation of the island because the man who was just hauled off was affected by the electromagnetic activity the drilling unleashed. Chang says it’s been contained. Daniel says it’s contained there, but the same thing will happen at The Swan and it will be 30 times more powerful and the results will be catastrophic. Chang asks how he could be qualified to know that. Daniel says, “I’m from the future.”

Chang thinks Daniel is having fun at his expense. Daniel shows him a book with equations. Then, he tells him Miles is his son. Daniel points out Miles’ name and asks if he thinks it’s coincidence. Miles says it’s not true. Chang tells Daniel to stay away from him. Miles asks what he’s doing. Daniel says he’s just making sure his father does what he’s supposed to do. Miles asks what that is. Daniel says, “You’ll see.”

Somewhere in time: Daniel is graduating from college. He’s with a woman named Theresa. His mother is there and wants to take him to dinner. Eloise tells Daniel he should be focusing on his work. She says he’s not going to have time for relationships, that the women in his life will be hurt because his work is more important. Daniel tells his mother he got a $1.5 million grant. She asks from whom and he says, “Charles Widmore.” She says she doesn’t want to fight with Daniel. She says that’s not why she came. She hands him a present, then walks out wishing him luck. Daniel opens the present. It’s a notebook. Inside it says, “No matter what, I will always love you.”

On the island: Sawyer tells everyone the party is over. He says they have to leave. He says they can either commandeer the sub or go back into the jungle. Hugo and Jin say they’re not getting on the sub. Miles and Daniel show up. Daniel asks if anyone can help him find The Hostiles. Juliet asks why. Daniel says, “Because one of them is my mother and she is the only one on this island who can get us back to where we belong.”

Somewhere in time:Daniel is watching TV, seeing the fake Oceanic flight on the bottom of the ocean. He’s crying. He doesn’t know why. Someone knocks on his door. It’s Widmore. Daniel says he has a condition that affects his memories. Widmore says they’ve never met. Daniel says he tested “it” on himself first. Widmore says he came to offer him a new opportunity. Daniel keeps looking at the Oceanic plane. Daniel says, “I don’t know why it’s bothering me so much. It’s so sad. They’re dead.” Widmore says, “What if I told you they’re not dead? What if I told you the plane was a fake – an elaborate expensive fake?” Daniel asks how he would know that. Widmore says, “Because I put it there.” Daniel asks why he would tell him. Widmore says Daniel won’t remember he told him that. Widmore tells him the real Oceanic plane crashed on an island with unique scientific properties. He wants to send Daniel to the island to further his research. He says it will heal Daniel’s mind and memory. Daniel asks why he’s doing all that for him. Widmore says, “Because you’re a man of tremendous gifts and it would be a shame to see them go to waste.” Daniel says he sounds like his mother. Widmore says, “That’s because we’re all friends.”

On the island: Hugo learns they went to 1954 – when they met Eloise. Hugo says, “You were in 1954 – like Fonzie times?” Sawyer won’t tell Daniel how to find The Hostiles until he tells them what’s going on. Jack says they don’t belong there. Jack turns to Kate and asks if she can get them to The Hostiles. Jack says, “Kate, you made me promise to never ask what happened to Aaron or why you came back here, but I know that reason isn’t here. It isn’t now.” Sawyer says, “Whatever her reason is, helping H.G. Wells talk to his mommy ain’t got nothing to do with us. Come with us, Freckles.” Juliet gives Kate the code for the fence – 141717 – and says she should take Daniel. She says, “It’s over for us here anyway.” Kate says OK. Daniel asks Miles to drive them. Miles gives Daniel the keys to the van. Sawyer says, “When you realize you’ve made a huge mistake, we’ll be at the beach, right where we started.” Everyone else goes to pack. Sawyer grabs Juliet’s hand and says, “Time to go.”

Kate says they need some guns. Daniel spots a young Charlotte on a swing. She’s eating chocolate and says she’s not allowed to have it before dinner. Daniel says he won’t tell. He asks if she knows Dr. Chang. She says yes. He says Dr. Chang will ask a lot of people to get on the submarine and leave the island and she’s going to have to leave. He tried to avoid telling her because he didn’t think he could change things, but “maybe I can.” Jack and Kate get guns. The security team shows up. Daniel tells them there was an accident at The Orchid. They see the guns. Daniel says they have to leave. Someone shoots Daniel. There’s a shootout. Jack, Kate and Daniel make it to a jeep. Jack shoots a fuel container, exploding it. They drive off in the jeep with shots following them.

Somewhere in time: Older Daniel is playing the piano. His mother walks in. She says hello. She asks about his job offer. She says it’s her business to know. She came to tell him it’s very improtant he says yes. Daniel says he can’t. He says, “He needs someone who can do really complex space-time calibrations and calculate bearings and I don’t know how to do that anymore.” Eloise asks if Widmore told him the island could make him better. Daniel says yes. She says then he could go on with his work. Daniel asks if she really wants him to go. She says yes. He asks if it will make her proud of him. She says it will. Daniel cries and says, “Then I’ll do it.”

On the island: Jack, Kate and Daniel are at the fence. Kate goes to put in the code. Jack looks at Daniel’s neck and sees Daniel was grazed by a bullet. Daniel says, “This is our present. When I met, did I have a scar on my neck? No because I hadn’t been shot yet. We can’t be so naive as to think nothing will happen to us. Anyone one of us can die, Jack.” They set off into the jungle. Jack says there’s no turning back now.

Sawyer and Juliet are packing up. Sawyer says he should have listened to her. He asks if Juliet still has his back. She asks if he still has hers. The alarm is going off. The security team is walking around with guns. They show up at Sawyer’s home. They say they’ve been infiltrated. Phil is banging around in the closet. They turn on Sawyer and Juliet.

Kate, Jack and Daniel are still walking. Jack asks if Daniel needs a gun to talk to his mother. Daniel says, “You don’t know my mother.” Daniel says in about four hours, the Dharma folks at The Swan station are going to drill into the energy and to contain it, they’ll have to cement the area in, like Chernobyl. It will be The Hatch. Daniel says these people will spend the next 20 years keeping it at bay by pressing a button – one Desmond will one day fail to push, causing Oceanic 815 to crash into the island. Then, a freighter will head there – and it the whole chain of events will start happening. Daniel says he can change that. He says you can’t change the past, but he realized he spent so much time focused on the constants, he forgot abut the variables. Daniel says people are the variables and that they can change their destiny. He thinks he can destroy The Swan. If he can, that hatch will never be built and their plane will land in Los Angeles. Kate asks how he plans on destroying the energy. He says he’s going to detonate a hydrogen bomb.

In Los Angeles:Eloise is apologizing to Penny for Desmond becoming a casualty in a conflict that’s bigger than him – bigger than any of them. Eloise says for the first time in a long time, she doesn’t know what’s going to happen next. A nurse tells Penny Desmond wants to see her. Desmond’s arm is in a sling. She says she thought she lost him. Desmond says, “I promised I’d never leave you again.” They kiss. Eloise walks out of the hospital. Widmore asks if Desmond is OK. She tells him to go and say hi to his daughter. Widmore says his relationship with Penny is one of the things he had to sacrifice. She says she had to send her son to the island. Widmore says, “He’s my son, too, Eloise.” She slaps him and walks off.

On the island: Kate says it’s a mistake. Jack says, “We disappeared off a plane in mid-air and ended up in 1977. I’m getting used to insane.” They find The Hostiles’ camp. Daniel says to wish him luck, then he goes to the camp. Daniel shows his gun and says he wants to speak to Eloise. Richard says she’s not there right now. Richard asks if they know each other. Daniel says it doesn’t matter. He needs to take him to Eloise. Daniel asks where the bomb is – the one he told him to bury. Daniel points the gun at Richard and starts counting, then he gets shot. Eloise pulled the trigger. Daniel says, “You knew. You always knew. You knew this was gonna happen. You sent me here anyway.” She asks who he is. Daniel says, “I’m your son.” What!?! Did he die?
