Wal-Mart Gang Initiation

An email/text message is spreading like wildfire, warning people of gang members targeting people outside Wal-Mart – or other shopping centers. Before you decide to hunker down in your home, there are a few things you should know. The first thing: THIS IS A HOAX.

The rumor has been circulating all over the country. If true, Americans would not be able to shop for days, perhaps weeks, without needing a bullet-proof vest! You should know, San Antonio Police don’t want to talk to us about this – a sign there’s nothing to it.

We did receive this email from New Braunfels police this afternoon:

New Braunfels, TexasNumerous citizens have called the New Braunfels Police Department reporting rumors of planned acts of violence that purportedly will occur at local large retail establishments. Investigation has revealed that this information is merely a rumor that has in fact been shown to be unsubstantiated and unreliable. This rumor appears to be a reemergence of an earlier rumor that surfaced back in 2005 and again in 2006.

That is basically what law enforcement will tell us about these emails/text messages. There are some signs that the message you’re getting is NOT legit. Here are a few:

  1. The email/text tells you to forward it to everyone you know.
  2. It questions why the media is not reporting it. People, if there was something like this that had some truth to it, believe me, it would be reported everywhere and often.
  3. Gang members might like some attention, but if they were truly planning to carry out assassinations, do you really think they’d put out word?

You can always check sites like Snopes for claims like this. In fact, their page on this rumor is quite lengthy, with some extra information from actual law enforcement.

So, calm down. Stop the forwarding. Continue on with your shopping. You should be safe!
