DWTS: Top 13

It’s week one and already there’s drama! Two of the ladies are hurt, so they’re being replaced by ladies who only had a short time to learn their dances. Will they be the first to go – or has some other “star” fizzled after weeks of training? The recap is after the jump. And if you missed it, check out the show’s official site.

Couple: Lil’ Kim & Derek Hough

Dance: Cha Cha Cha

This was dedicated to her girls in the federal prison. That might be a first! I thought Derek did most of the dancing. Kim did a couple of splits. Not bad for her first time on the dance floor.

Len thought it was first class. Bruno said she was “nasty but tasty.” And he thought she could work wonders with her tushy (his word – not mine). Carrie Ann said Kim had great potential.

SCORE: 21

Couple: Belinda Carlisle & Jonathan Roberts

Dance: Waltz

I’m rooting for her because I love the Go-Gos! She looked lovely. It was graceful.

Bruno said she looked like Julie Andrews in her first spin, then she turned into Cloris Leachman. He told her to work on her footwork. Carrie Ann told Belinda to work on trusting Jonathan. Len thought there was grace and elegance, with a few awkward moments.

SCORE: 17

Couple: Lawrence Taylor & Edyta Sliwinska

Dance: Cha Cha Cha

When I watch LT’s feet, I’m impressed. Then I look up at his face and it looks like he’s counting steps. Not bad for a first dance. I think if he relaxes a little bit, he’ll be great!

Carrie Ann thinks he needs to get down and dirty. Len liked Lawrence’s casual approach. Bruno said it was so laid back it was thrown away. He thinks Lawrence needs to attack it.

SCORE: 16

Couple: Steve-O & Lacey Schwimmer

Dance: Waltz

I have set the bar VERY low for Steve-O. I mean, the guy has a reputation of being a goof (and that’s a nice word for it). OK. I’m impressed. He actually did a good job!

Len admired Steve-O coming out fully committed. He thought it was not technically good, but he expected worse. Bruno called it a big pile of slapstick that didn’t make him laugh. The technique wasn’t good. Carrie Ann was mesmerized by the beauty and the awkwardness.

SCORE: 17

Couple: Gilles Marini & Cheryl Burke

Dance: Cha Cha Cha

So Gilles is probably the most, um, exposed contestant on this show (and you probably haven’t heard of him!). I haven’t let that cloud my judgment. This was hot! Cheryl even grabbed his booty!

Carrie Ann gave it a “woo-hoo!” She said it was fantastic. Bruno said, “Clothes on or clothes off, you certainly know how to strut your stuff.” He’s looking for explosions. Len thought Gilles pulled it off.

SCORE: 24

Couple: Chuck Wicks & Julianne Hough

Dance: Waltz

This was sweet. I’m not just saying that because these two are a real couple! I liked it.

Bruno thought it looked good at times, then it felt like he was chasing Julianne. Len liked the footwork and movement. Carrie Ann thinks Chuck might be one of the most graceful men they’ve had on the show in a while. She did catch Julianne’s foot coming off the ground.

SCORE: 20

Jewel and Nancy O’Dell are the injured ladies. Jewel’s replacement is up next.

Couple: Holly Madison & Dmitry Chaplin

Dance: Cha Cha Cha

I have low expectations because she hasn’t had much time to practice. OOH! A little bit of awkwardness. I thought Holly did a whole lot of walking around and not much dancing.

Len thought it wasn’t bad. Carrie Ann thinks Holly has a lot of charisma. She said she’s like a newborn deer – a little wobbly on the legs. Bruno says there’s hope for Holly.

SCORE: 18

Couple: Ty Murray & Chelsie Hightower

Dance: Cha Cha Cha

Hope he can cowboy up! I’m pleasantly surprised! Ty’s not bad. He’s not great, but he tried hard and looked like he had fun, even when it appeared he lost his place.

Bruno said it looked more like an army drill. Len said part of the charm of the show is people coming out and try something out of their comfort level. Carrie Ann called him one cute cowboy. She liked the fact that he let go and had fun.

SCORE: 14

Couple: Shawn Johnson & Mark Ballas

Dance: Waltz

This little gymnast is the youngest contestant. She’s doing a very grown up dance. I think she did a very good  job.

Carrie Ann was moved by the dance. Bruno called Shawn refined for her age. He did say she sometimes had gymnastic arms – but that can be corrected. Len said she need a little more fluidity in her arms, but it was otherwise fantastic.

SCORE: 23

Couple: Steve Wozniak & Karina Smirnoff

Dance: Cha Cha Cha

He says he’s going to prove that nerds can dance. We’ll see. Oh. My. Gosh. When I focused on Steve, I couldn’t get past his crazy faces. Then, Karina stepped out as the decoy in some barely there dress.

Len said it held his attention. He enjoyed Steve’s knee spin, but thought the rest of the dance was a disaster. Bruno thought it was like watching a Teletubby go wild at a gay pride parade. Carrie Ann said he’s going out on a limb. She was cheering for him.

SCORE: 13

Couple: David Alan Grier & Kym Johnson

Dance: Waltz

I liked this! It was probably one of the best dances of the evening!

Bruno said David had good lines at times, but leaned too much toward Kym while he was holding. He also noticed David’s many faces during the dance. Carrie Ann said David needs to be careful with his face because it can be distracting. She also saw Kym’s foot come off the ground. Len said there was more good in the performance than bad. He said David’s bum sticks out too much.

SCORE: 19

Couple: Denise Richards & Maksim Chmerkovskiy

Dance: Cha Cha Cha

It wasn’t bad. She didn’t look that comfortable out there. But Denise kept a smile on her face through the whole thing.

Carrie Ann thought Denise looked terrified. She thought Denise has potential. Len thought she gave it a real shot, but it was loose. Bruno said she has it all but doesn’t know what to do with it.

SCORE: 18

Couple: Melissa Rycroft & Tony Dovolani

Dance: Waltz

She had her first training session Saturday (she’s Nancy’s replacement)! Fingers crossed for this “Bachelor” reject! It looks like she’s done this before. Melissa did a really good job!

Len thinks it’s obvious Melissa has danced before (Melissa was a Dallas Cowboy cheerleader and took ballet years ago). Bruno said the Bachelor guy is a loser. He said watching her arms was like watching a beautiful bird take off. Carrie Ann says Melissa is a beautiful dancer.

SCORE: 23

Monday’s scores will be added with next Monday’s scores. Then, someone will be sent home next Tuesday! If you’re curious about the music, ABC should post it here.
