DWTS Fall 2008 Cast Revealed

It’s been months since the “stars” have put on their dancing shoes and wowed us with their ability to shimmy, shake, glide and get down with their bad selves.

This morning, the new cast was revealed on Good Morning America. It’s the biggest cast ever for Dancing With The Stars. Who will take the title away from Kristi? The cast, their credentials and my predictions are after the jump.

STAR: Lance Bass

HOW YOU KNOW HIM: He was a member of N*SYNC. He’s also trained to be a cosmonaut, you know, in case he ever gets the cash to take a trip to outer space.

PARTNER: Lacey Schwimmer, the 2006 U.S. Youth Latin Champ and 2007 World Swing Dance Champ (and runner up on So You Think You Can Dance).

HOW HE’LL DO: Like his bandmate (and DWTS finalist, Joey Fatone), Lance has pop moves. Lacey really can dance. I think her personality will cheer him on – so long as Lance can survive the dreaded Quick Step!

STAR: Rocco Dispirito

HOW YOU KNOW HIM: Celebrity Chef who also cooks on reality TV (The Restaurant)

PARTNER: Karina Smirnoff

HOW HE’LL DO: Rocco is used to doing the ordering, but it will be Karina who dishes out the orders on this show. If he has just a little bit of talent, Karina will whip it out of him.

STAR: Misty May-Treanor

HOW YOU KNOW HER: If you watched the Olympics, you recently saw her win a second gold medal (along with partner Kerri Walsh).

PARTNER: Maksim Chmerkovskiy

HOW SHE’LL DO: You don’t win a gold medal without putting in a lot of work. I expect a very tanned Misty to partner up with Maks, who took the last season off, to put up a good fight for the mirrored disco ball trophy.

STAR: Maurice Greene

HOW YOU KNOW HIM: He’s the world fastest man – and he has a couple of gold medals from the 2000 and 2004 Olympics.

PARTNER: Cheryl Burke

HOW HE’LL DO: Those fast feet will come in handy. I think the judges will be paying more attention to his upper body in this competition.

STAR: Toni Braxton

HOW YOU KNOW HER: The Grammy winning singer (Un-break My Heart) has also performed on Broadway.

PARTNER: Alec Mazo, the season one champion

HOW SHE’LL DO: I think she’ll be the sentimental favorite, as she’s battling heart disease. As long as she’s healthy, I think she’ll do just fine.

STAR: Kim Kardashian

HOW YOU KNOW HER: She has her own reality TV show and just starred in the spoof Disaster Movie

PARTNER: Mark Ballas, defending DWTS champion

HOW SHE’LL DO: She said this morning she cut her foot, but believes she’ll be able to dance. I think she’ll make it onto the dance floor, but don’t expect her to go to the finals.

STAR: Cody Linley

HOW YOU KNOW HIM: He’s on a little show called Hannah Montana.

PARTNER: Julianne Hough

HOW HE’LL DO: He and Julianne are the youngest couple on this show – ever! That could be to their advantage, as they should not show signs of fatigue as the competition goes on. Plus, Cody’s sure to bring out the young viewers, who no doubt will be dialing in votes to keep him on the show for a while.

STAR: Cloris Leachman

HOW YOU KNOW HER: Depending on your age, you might remember her from The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Facts of Life, Malcolm in the Middle and (most recently) The Comedy Central Roast of Bob Saget

PARTNER: Corky Ballas – he’s Mark’s father and World Latin Champion

HOW SHE’LL DO: She’ll be funny (and those censors better be ready – she has a potty mouth). I presume Mark didn’t get his talent on luck alone, so his dad should be able to get Cloris to stick around a little bit. I believe Cloris may be the most senior celebrity dancer ever on this show.

STAR: Ted McGinley

HOW YOU KNOW HIM: He’s been around a while. You might remember him from shows like Married With Children, Hope and Faith and Happy Days. He also starred in Revenge of The Nerds.

PARTNER: Inna Brayer. This is her first time on the show, but she is the current US Amateur 10 Dance Champion.

HOW HE’LL DO: Hmmm. If he’s super stiff, he could be the new Harry Hamlin. I don’t think he’ll make it to the finals, but he might make it to the midway point.

STAR: Brooke Burke

HOW YOU KNOW HER: She’s been on reality TV shows (Wild On!, Rock Star: INXS, Rock Star: Supernova) and on scripted shows (Las Vegas, Less Than Perfect, Monk)

PARTNER: Derek Hough

HOW SHE’LL DO: Do a little search online and you know she’ll look great. Can she dance? I don’t know. Derek did make Shannon Elizabeth look good last season, so perhaps he can pull it off with Brooke, too.

STAR: Jeffrey Ross

HOW YOU KNOW HIM: He’s a comic, and to give you a hint about his style, they call him “The Meanest Man in Comedy.” He’s hosted those roasts on Comedy Central. He’s also been in movies (Stuck on You, The Aristocrats) and on TV (Weeds and C.S.I.)

PARTNER: Edyta Sliwinska

HOW HE’LL DO: I’m sensing awkwardness – a la Adam Carolla or Penn Jillette. Edyta has had some strong partners in her previous six contestants, so maybe she can get Jeffrey to put aside the jokes and do some dancing. When he gets criticism, I hope the censors are ready! He also has a potty mouth!

STAR: Warren Sapp

HOW YOU KNOW HIM: He spent 13 years in the NFL and has a Super Bowl ring to show for it.

PARTNER: Kym Johnson

HOW HE’LL DO: Kym will look like a doll in his arms, but I wouldn’t count Warren out early. He’s an athlete, so he’s competitive. Plus, he probably won’t want to be known as that guy who didn’t do as well as Jerry Rice and Emmitt Smith.

STAR: Susan Lucci

HOW YOU KNOW HER: She’s been on All My Children since 1970 (and I’m happy to say that’s before I was born).

PARTNER: Tony Dovolani

HOW SHE’LL DO: I think she’ll be graceful and lovely, but I don’t expect her to see the finals. She was nominated 19 times for an Emmy before she finally won, sadly, she won’t get that many chances to take the prize here.

This season is full of firsts: first time to have 13 contestants, first time the stars will learn two dances the first week, first time the show will debut on three nights, first time two couples will be eliminated the first week (so one couple won’t get to perform their second dance). The show returns September 22 on KSAT-12.

Without seeing them perform Latin or ballroom dances, I’m not afraid to say my favorites are Lance, Misty, Cody, Brooke and Warren. Who do you like? Let me know in the comments section!
