Friday Freebies, August 1

I’ve tracked down some pretty good freebies for you this week. Some are only good today or the next few days. To avoid confusion, make sure you check the dates before you try to cash in. There are some good discounts, too. See what they are after the jump.

Don’t hate me for reminding  you, but it’s time to start getting ready for the kids to go back to school. You might consider doing the supply shopping at Office Max. You can get some things for a penny – after you buy one at regular price. There’s also a penny deal for regular office supplies, just click here to see what’s available under that offer.

Would you like to help the troops? How about doing it for free? HBO’s new series “Generation Kill” is coordinating a donation effort. Just go to their website, then click on troop drive. Then, you choose what you’d like to send to the troops.

They say you should start the day with breakfast. Why not make it free? Go here for a sample of Oatmeal Crisp cereal.

If you’re interested in healthy meals, go here for a free cookbook catering to diabetics.

Your dog may not know it’s free, but you will. Go here for a free can of Mighty Dog. Note: You’ll need to register.

If you have little ones in diapers, pick some up at Babies R Us TODAY and they’ll give you a $15 gift card.

How’s your staycation going? Do you want to add some culture to it? Go here to participate in Museum Day and get a free pass to a museum. You can’t just take it to any museum – you have to choose a venue first. And if you’re looking for something to do this weekend, make plans to take the whole family to the San Antonio Museum of Art. Saturday, August 2, take the kids there at 11 a.m. for a special story time. Then, on Sunday, August 3, the whole family can spend the afternoon getting a good look at the museum’s special summer exhibition, VISIONS OF VICTORY: A CENTURY OF SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHY. Just make sure you’re there between 1-5. Parking is free.

Rocker-types will like this one: watch Lollapalooza from the comforts of your air conditioned home and without crowds via this website.

If you’re trying to go green, or would just like to try some free cleaning products, go to this website. You give them your information, they send them to you, you try them and then you write a review. I guess this one is more an assignment than a total freebie, but you still don’t have to pay for anything.

Did you ever read Thomas L. Friedman’s The World Is Flat? The author is letting people download the audiobook for free until August 4th. Just click here.

If you want to share a freebie or want to challenge me to find something specific, send an email to Please put “FRIDAY FREEBIES” in the subject line. I’ll be back next week with more tips. Enjoy!
