DWTS: The Semifinals

Young Cody may get his mojo back for the semifinals now that his partner, Julianne, is back. Will Brooke get another perfect score or will someone knock her out of the top spot?
The finals are on the line, folks! So how did they do in their two dances tonight? Find out in the recap of Monday’s show after the jump!
Brooke Burke & Derek Hough
Dance: Jive
Oh no! There were a few moments where they were out of sync, but this was just OK. It wasn’t my favorite dance of Brooke’s.
Len called it a disaster. Bruno says the technique went down the toilet. Carrie Ann says the illegal lift was disrespectful. She was upset about that.
SCORE: 21
Dance: Salsa
Len worked with Brooke on her legs. He says she sometimes needs to have her legs straight, not flexed. Professional salsa dancers performed first. I don’t envy Brooke having to follow them. They did another lift – is that banned? This dance was much better than the jive. I’m proud of Brooke for getting right back out there and making me forget about that jive (though I didn’t really forget because it’s just a few sentences back).
Bruno says Brooke is back! He says he knows she can work it to fever pitch. Carrie Ann says there were a lot of lifts, but they were working. They were all difficult lifts. Len says if Brooke is in the finals she should work to her strengths – she has great technique.I have to say, I cannot take Samantha Harris saying “Of course” and “Obviously” anymore!
SCORE: 28
TOTAL SCORE: 49
Cody Linley & Julianne Hough
Dance: Paso Doble
I liked it. I think Cody did a good job of looking strong. Is it me, or does it look like he got taller?
Bruno says it was the AWOL Android and the Queen of Mean. He says the Spanish lines were non-existent, the timing was off and he didn’t think it was fun. Carrie Ann says she gives it a 10 for determination. She says Cody did a good job, but he needs to watch his hands. Len says it was not good. He says it was stiff and wooden and lacked dance quality.
SCORE: 22
Dance: Salsa
Len worked with Cody on his hip action – not at all weird (and readers, that’s sarcasm). They danced together. Again, not weird. OOH! They did a lift! And another! I think this was better than the paso doble.
Carrie Ann says it was a lot of fun. She says Cody lacks musicality. Len says the musicality was quite good. He says the hips were working well. He called Cody a strong lad. Bruno says Cody had fun with it. He says it was loose technically.
SCORE: 24
TOTAL SCORE: 46
Warren Sapp & Kym Johnson
Dance: Mambo
This was fun. It was the first time I smiled while watching the show tonight. Between the two of them, there was a whole lotta shakin’ goin’ on!
Carrie Ann says Warren needs to up the game and do more content. Len says Warren knows how to perform and that’s what he does – he doesn’t mess around with technique. Bruno says Warren is such a super-sized sense of fun he gets away with murder.
SCORE: 24
Dance: Jitterbug
Len wants to work with Warren on his feet. He taught Warren how to keep his feet locked. Warren taught Len how to do his own dance. Lucky for Warren, he and Kym didn’t have to immediately follow the pros who performed the jitterbug (they were fantastic). Warren’s jitterbug was slow. It was happy. It had two lifts. I wasn’t wowed by it.
Len says Warren is a joyful person to watch. He says Warren sold it. Bruno says Len’s masterclass didn’t work. He says Warren’s feet were all over the place. Carrie Ann loved it. She was afraid Warren might drop Kym during the lifts.
SCORE: 25
TOTAL SCORE: 49
Lance Bass & Lacey Schwimmer
Dance: Mambo
This was completely different from Warren’s mambo – and I liked it! I think it was difficult and certainly had the steps the judges wanted to see in Warren’s. A+ from me!
Len says it’s the best dance so far. Bruno says it’s semifinal material. He says it still had Lance’s quirks and detail. Carrie Ann says it was a show stopper.
SCORE: 28
Dance: Jitterbug
Len helped Lance tackle his pigeon toes. Len showed up barefoot, then he put shoes on. He taught Lance to turn his thigh out to straighten out his foot. Lance lost his left shoe! This had a lot more energy than Warren’s dance. They did a fun lift at the end with Lacey going over Lance’s head and landing on her feet.
Bruno says shoes off or shoes on, that was brilliant. He says it was a joy. Carrie Ann says Lance and Lacey picked it perfectly. She says it was magic. Len says Lance danced two fabulous dances.
SCORE: 29
TOTAL SCORE: 57
Tomorrow, the ballroom kids dance from 7-8. Then at 8, John Legend, Leona Lewis, Julianne Hough and Aretha Franklin will sing. Oh, and last season’s champ, Kristi Yamaguchi will return to perform with Mark Ballas!
