Where’s Hillary Clinton?

By Jenny Farley in Washington, DC

If you’ve been asking yourself where’s Hillary? Ask no more. After a hard fought but sometimes bitter primary campaign Hillary Clinton has been staying out of the national spotlight. Monday night Mayor Michael Bloomberg threw her a party at Gracie mansion welcoming her back to New York politics after an 18 month campaign  for the White House.

Obama recently said he’s proud to call her a “friend” and said he desperately needed her and Bill Clinton involved in his campaign. And though there’s still no word on husband Bill’s role at the Democratic convention, we know she’ll be speaking there. Now she’s planning to campaign for Obama in two crucial states — Nevada and Florida. On Friday she’ll hold rallies in Las Vegas and events in South Florida are planned for August 21st — not long before the Democratic convention.  But it will most likely be a solo affair.  At this point Obama is not expected to appear with her in Nevada and possibly not in Florida. The two campaigned together in June in Unity, New Hampshire not long after she conceded the Democratic nomination – and they appeared at a fundraiser in New York in July.

At last night’s New York party, Clinton thanked her constituents for letting her campaign for president for 18 months and said she’s “open for business” once more. The hype has died down over Clinton being a possible vice presidential candidate. The question remains open whether her most loyal supporters will back Obama at the polls without her on the ticket.  But don’t strike Hillary off the V.P. short list just yet.  As is always true in politics — anything can happen.
