DWTS: Kristi Wins!

This picture just makes me happy! Kristi wins (Yay! Girl Power!) and the two guys who just couldn’t out-dance her lift her and seem genuinely happy for her! Does it get better than that? After a very slow two-hour finale, I found some highlights. If you missed the finale, you can watch it here for free.

At the beginning of the show, Tom Bergeron said in five seasons, there’s been only one time that the dancer who scored highest with the judges went on to win. I have no idea who that is (I didn’t start watching this show until season three).

Despite being the second highest scorer of the week, Cristian was eliminated fairly quickly. The people didn’t love him as much as they loved Kristi and Jason. Cristian was the first of all the other dancers who got the ax who performed. Now, what I didn’t understand is why the previous performers did the dances that got them cut? I mean, I would have rather seen what they or the judges thought were their best dances – not the ones the viewers (and voters) hated.

Adam did his silly unicycle-riding paso doble. Then, he made the following random speech:

“This is why the terrorists hate us. It’s not the glitter and pomp and circumstance. We got black and white, we got Hispanic and Asian, we got gay, straight and Guttenberg all working – all working together for one common goal: to get the mirror ball. And the mirror ball doesn’t care what color you are. It doesn’t care how rich your parents are. and it doesn’t care what God you pray to. It’s an even wooden floor and may the best man or woman win. And I say God bless Dancing With The Stars and God bless the USA.”

When he started, I had no idea where he was going, then by the end I was almost laughing and wondering if Adam is running for office (shakes head).

The show was also filled with what us in the TV biz call packages (pre-taped stories), looking back at the season, with behind the scenes extras – even a funny dig at the “bromance” between Cristian and Jason.

Usher performed twice. Is it just me, or did it look like he’s pushing for a role in a musical?

Then, Kristi came out and did that fantastic jive she did earlier in the season. She got a perfect score the first time she did it. I was a little worried when she got her heel caught in the back of her skirt that it would a) lead to a wardrobe malfunction and b) cost her points. Happily, it did not. She handled that like a true pro! The judges all said she was the most consistent dancer from week one. It looked like the judges wanted to give her more than 10 points each, but their paddles only go up to 10. She got another 30.

Jason brought back his quick step. It was just as quick as it was the first time we saw it, only this time it was smoother. He looked at ease as he and Edyta nearly ran over every inch of the floor! Bruno said they moved like angels. Carrie Ann said the elegance of spirit shines through (whatever that means). Len said Kristi is the judge’s champion, but Jason is the people’s champion. The judges gave Jason a 30.

Here’s the final score:

Kristi: 90

Jason: 81

That, combined with viewer votes, put Kristi on top. She called the 10 week competition a “dream experience.” Not only did she set the bar high for all the dancers this season, but the next round of celebrities who dare dance have their work cut out!

And I’ll say this one last time: the fact that she was a professional figure skater did not give her an unfair advantage. You don’t move your feet the same on skates as you do while dancing. You also do not get to react to nailing the steps in your dance until AFTER it’s completed. In figure skating, if you do a move perfectly, it’s OK to smile. You Kristi haters lost. Get over it.

Congratulations, Kristi!

  2. Oh the Adam Carolla speech was HYSTERICAL! Thanks for printing it — I didn’t see, but reading it was way funnier.
