LOST: Something Nice Back Home

WOW! Jack is tough – or at least he tried to be last night. Who wants to be wide awake while having their belly sliced open so a baby doctor can take out your burst appendix? If you’re saying, “Me! Me!” You belong with Hurley in the mental hospital!
The recap is after the jump. If you missed last night’s show, titled “Something Nice Back Home,” click here.
The episode starts with Jack passed out on the island. Bernard is being tough with Faraday (who knew a guy named Bernard could be so, um, intense?). Once Jack comes to, Bernard tells him “These people are lying to us.” Jack says the freighter people will come back to the island for their people and “we’ll be waiting.” Then he passes out again.
FLASH FORWARD… Jack gets a phone call reminding him about an appointment. He gets out of bed, walks down stairs, steps on a toy, reads the newspaper (the headline says “Yankees sweep Red Sox” and Jack says, “A-Rod” – that’s 2006). He goes to the bathroom and there’s a woman in a steamed up shower. It’s Kate. They kiss. Later, Jack reads a book to Aaron. Kate says she’s glad he changed his mind about seeing Aaron. They kiss again.
BACK ON THE ISLAND… Jack insists he’s dehydrated and needs rest. In the jungle, Claire, Aaron, Sawyer and Miles are walking when Miles hears Alex’s voice say “no” and then gunshots. Miles asks, “Who’s Danielle and Karl?” Then, he starts digging and finds their buddies.
SAWYER: How’d you know they were down there? Your buddies do this?
MILES: They’re not my buddies, man. I didn’t sign up for this.
First question of the night: What exactly did he sign up for?
Back on the beach, Juliet determines Jack’s appendix must come out. She sends Sun after supplies from the medical station, and Faraday says he can help. Rose says they can’t be trusted. Then, there’s an exchange between Faraday and Charlotte about the Oceanic people not trusting her because of her bad attitude. Juliet hands Jin a gun, making sure he understands if there’s any funny business, he’s to shoot ‘em up.
Miles keeps asking questions about Claire. This leads me to my second question: Why Claire? I know he’s a ghostbuster – or something like that – so does he sense something about her or someone there for her (I’ll get to that in a minute)? Sawyer tells Miles he has to stay away from Claire. Third question: Why is Sawyer so intent on looking out for Claire? Sawyer’s “restraining order” in place, Miles keeps staring at Claire.
On the beach, this little exchange goes down:
ROSE: “Why did he get sick?”
BERNARD: Why? It’s just–it’s just bad luck.
ROSE: The day before we’re all supposed to be rescued, the person that we count on the most suddenly comes down with a life-threatening condition, and you’re chalking it up to bad luck?
BERNARD: Well, what are you saying, that–that Jack did something to offend the gods? People get sick, Rose.
ROSE: Not here. Here, they get better.
Interesting. Jack tells Juliet he wants to be awake for surgery. He wants Kate to hold a mirror so he can watch. Juliet says Bernard could do it since he’s a dentist. Jack says, “I want it to be Kate.”
FLASH FORWARD: Jack is walking out a patient, he sees someone follow her out. Then, another doctor calls him about Hurley. Jack goes to see him in the mental hospital because Hurley’s not taking his meds. Jack asks him why he’s not taking them, and Hurley gives me my first WHAT?!?! of the night.
Hurley: Because we’re all dead. All of us. All the Oceanic 6. We never got off that island.
Jack tells Hurley he’s living with Kate and Aaron. Second WHAT?!?! moment:
Hurley: Living with Kate. Taking care of Aaron. It all seems so perfect. Just like heaven.
Hurley says he was happy until he saw Charlie, who told him Jack would come by. Charlie made him pass on a message to Jack saying, “You’re not supposed to raise him, Jack.” Third WHAT?!?! Hurley asks if he means Aaron. Jack tells him to take his meds, then walks off. Hurley says, “Charley said someone will visit you – SOON.”
Back on the island… the helicopter pilot appears and tells Miles, Sawyer and Claire to hide. Then, those guys Smoky went after last week appear. They hear Aaron fuss, but the pilot manages to get them back to the chopper.
Juliet asks Kate to help with the surgery, but doesn’t tell her Jack wants her there.
FLASH FORWARD: We see Jack sitting in a vehicle outside the mental hospital, looking at the bench where Hurley says Charlie comes to see him. He leaves, gets home and wakes Kate. They have a discussion about whether he’s good with Aaron. She says yes. Jack proposes, shows a ring, Kate says yes.
Back on the island… It’s surgery time. Jin has a conversation with Charlotte, who just happens to speak Korean. So, in his native tongue, he scares the bejeezus out of her by saying, “Take my wife off the island.” Charlotte says, “What about the others?” Jin say, “Just get her on the helicopter” and walks away.
Bernard gives Jack a shot of lidocaine, Juliet starts hacking into Jack’s belly, he starts to scream, Kate’s holding the mirror and crying, Juliet orders her out of the room and Bernard gives Jack a little chloroform nap.
FLASH FORWARD: Jack is in his office working, but a beeping gets his attention. It’s the smoke detector, so he takes out the battery. Then hears his name called. He looks and it’s his dad. Yep another WHAT?!?! moment. Then, a doctor says his name, he turns around to see who that is, then turns back around and his dad is gone. He then asks her for some sleeping pills, saying he’s under stress. She hands him a prescription and tells him he should talk to someone. (Helloooo, Charlie? Where are you???)
Jack goes home to find Kate on the phone. She’s saying Jack never gets home before 8. She sees Jack, then hangs up. He asks who she was talking to and she says it’s a mom from the playground. Jack finds his happy place after popping some pills and chasing them with a beer.
In the jungle… Claire wakes and Aaron is not next to her. She looks across the campfire and there’s a man holding her baby. She says, “Dad?” then walks over to him. (Now, my memory’s a little fuzzy. Did Claire ever find out he was her dad – or did she just know it when she woke up?)
Jack is OK after surgery. He has his eyes closed as Juliet tells Kate Jack kissed her. She said it was to prove he doesn’t love someone else. Kate walks out. Juliet tells Jack she knows he’s awake and he opens his eyes.
FLASH FORWARD: Kate returns home, surprised to see Jack (with bottles covering a table in front of him). He tells Kate he saw Hurley and says that he’s crazy. Then, he tries to find out what Kate’s up to.
JACK: I wanna know where you were. I wanna know who you were with.
KATE: It doesn’t matter, Jack. Please.
JACK: No, tell me. Tell me!
KATE: (Sighs) I was doing something for him.
JACK: For who?
KATE: For Sawyer. I made him a promise. It… (sighs)
JACK: (sighs) What?
KATE: It doesn’t matter. It has nothing to do with us.
JACK: Then why won’t you tell me?
KATE: Because–because he wouldn’t want me to.
JACK: But he’s not here, is he? No. No, he made his choice. He chose to stay. I’m the one who came back. I’m the one who’s here. I’m the one who saved you.
KATE: Jack. (Sniffles) You can’t–you can’t do this. If you have problems, you need to figure them out. All right? ‘Cause I can’t have you like this around my son.
JACK: Your son? You’re not even related to him!
And there’s Aaron, holding a stuffed whale. Kate runs to hug the boy.
On the island… Sawyer wakes up and sees Miles, but no Claire.
MILES: Morning.
SAWYER: It’s way too early for Chinese. (Grunts) Where’s Claire? Ladies’ room?
MILES: Nope. She just walked off into the jungle.
SAWYER: What? When?
MILES: In the middle of the night. Just got up and left.
SAWYER: You let her go alone?
MILES: She wasn’t alone.
SAWYER: Well, who was she with?
MILES: She called him “Dad”. I’d have followed them, but I have a restraining order.
WHAT?!?!
There’s a baby crying. Sawyer follows the sound and finds Aaron alone in the trees. He’s hollering for Claire.
Last questions: Is Jack’s dad a “grim reaper” type, trying to make some sort of family reunion in the afterlife? If people don’t die on the island, as we’ve been told, is Daddy alive and traveling in time?
Next week, it looks like we’ll have more daddy drama. I swear I saw Ben’s dad having a talk with Locke in the preview. And Michael is shouting “He’s going to kill everyone!” Well, not everyone. We already know six people make it off the island.
