Friday Freebies – July 10th

El Nino is Back

After 2 years of La Nina conditions (cool tropical Pacific) the Pacific has warmed up dramatically and its now official,  according to NOAA El Nino is back.  Unfortunately it does not mean an end to our drought right away.  El Nino does not have much impact on our summer weather except to suppress the number of tropical storms in the Atlantic-Gulf basin.  However, El Nino is linked to fall and winter weather here and that is good news.  Most El Nino years our fall and winters are cooler and wetter than normal.  With temperatures hitting triple digits now cool and wet sounds good.  By the way 1998 was an El Nino year and a fierce summer drought with 36 days of 100 or higher was followed by the 500 year flood in October of 1998.
